My colleague Martin Comas has written an interesting story about a Lake County production of “The Vagina Monologues,” which was deemed inappropriate to be staged at Lake-Sumter Community College.
Director Julie Devin has found a new venue — Leesburg’s Starlight Ballroom and Dance Center — and the show will go on at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 30.

Here’s the particulars on Saturday’s performance:
V-Day Leesburg and Lake Sumter Community College will proudly present a reading of the famous Eve Ensler play, “The Vagina Monologues” on Saturday, April 30th at 7 p.m. at the Starlight Ballroom and Dance Center, 414 W. Main Street in historic downtown Leesburg. Admission is $15 for adults and $7 for students with a valid ID.
V-Day productions are based on the mission that violence against women and girls must stop. To do this, during the months of February, March and April, Eve Ensler allows groups around the world to produce a performance of this play, as well as other works created by V-Day, and use the proceeds for local individual projects and programs that work to end violence against women and girls. This year’s local beneficiary will be Haven, Inc. of Lake and Sumter Counties. Haven provides all levels of services for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. In addition, 10% of the proceeds from the April 30th production will benefit V-Day’s Spotlight Campaign on the Women and Girls of Haiti. What began as one event in New York City in 1998 today includes over 5,400 V-Day events annually worldwide. Recently, Stetson University produced their 10th anniversary production of “The Vagina Monologues” in DeLand.
Prior to this play, a free showing of the documentary film, “V-Day: Until the Violence Stops” will be shown at the Leesburg Public Library from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at 100 E. Main St., Leesburg.
Reservations are requested or can be purchased the day of the performance after 5 p.m. For further information, please contact 352-460-4359.
